Education is now using Industry approaches.

Many colleges are now using industry approaches to e-learning, to enable their students:

  • to access learning at a time and place which suits them,
  • to devise their own learning programmes,
  • and to gain understanding and skills which go far beyond the standard curriculum.

This is an important development for Universities, Colleges and even for schools.

This kind of development is being pioneered in the UK by NETg (www.netg.co.uk) but it can easily be adopted in other European countries. NETg already has e-learning courses available in Dutch, French, German, Portuguese and Spanish.

In common with the best industry practice, the e-learning programmes can be combined with face-to-face teaching and can be fully integrated into the educational provision of the college or university. As well as helping the students learn, teachers too can gain the I.T. skills which are becoming essential in their work. This can be through European Computer Driving Licence (ECDL) courses or more advanced courses such as new media and web design.

E-learning courses can not only support learning of the qualifications the college already offers, but can enable students to gain additional skills and qualifications that are increasingly important to industry.

This kind of development is changing the face of education. Rigid timetables and teacher-centric lessons delivered only in lecture rooms are being replaced by flexible and interactive processes between students and teachers, accessible much more widely.
